Become a Mississippi Concealed Carry Instructor

Keep in mind, although we provide the credentials you need, each state has its own process for licensing you as an instructor. Read the information and click the links for specifics for your state.

NRA Certified Basic Pistol Instructor:
This is a 1 day Instructor level course, but it does have some significant prerequisites you need to be aware of.

Pre-requisites are as follows: Must have a current NRA Basic Instructor Training (The BIT will cover NRA policies, procedures, basic public speaking skills, training methods, use of a training team, training aids, organization and budget, and preparing to teach.) and complete the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course Instructor Led Training as a student.

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Instructor Course teaches the instructor candidate how to teach the fundamentals of handgun safety, operation, and responsible ownership to new shooters throughout the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Blended Course and the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course Instructor Led Training.

NRA Range Safety Officer:
This 1 day course develops NRA Certified Range Safety Officers with the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

What to Bring

A copy (digital or print) of the above NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Instructor Led Training documents and completion certificate if you are not taking that portion of training with us.

Bring a 3 ring binder
Bring a target shooting pistol
Bring a couple hundred rounds of ammunition

*Read the Instructor materials. Know the shooting fundamentals taught in those materials. Practice your qualifications BEFORE you come.

This course block is not a preparatory seminar. Successful completion of the minimum course block will certify you as an NRA Trainer in the NRA Basic Pistol Instructor Discipline. It will provide you with the NRA instructor certification needed to teach the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Instructor Led Training Course and the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Blended Course. With the NRA Range Safety Officer Course, you will be certified as an NRA Range Safety Officer.

Before you get Concealed Carry Instructor training, make sure your instructors are current NRA certified trainers. NRA Training Counselors train NRA Instructors. NRA Instructors train students. If you are in doubt, ask to see your Training Counselor's current certification to verify his Training Counselor credentials. If your trainer is not an NRA Training Counselor they cannot certify you as an NRA Instructor.

Mississippi Concealed Handgun Permit Instructor requirements:


The state of Mississippi requires you to have the following courses.

The instructor applicant must be a certified firearms instructor who has been certified by a nationally recognized organization that customarily offers firearms training or by any other organization approved by the Department of Public Safety.

The instructor applicant must complete the instructor’s application and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) forms. The instructor applicant may request the instructor’s application and MOU by emailing Jeff Nester, the DPS Certified Firearms Instructor Coordinator, email: jnester@dps.ms.gov .

The instructor applicant must schedule an interview with Jeff Nester via email: jnester@dps.ms.gov or via telephone: (601) 987-1575. Interviews are conducted on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9am-11am and 1pm-4pm.

All interviews are conducted at the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol’s Firearms Permit Unit HQ office located at 1900 E. Woodrow Wilson, Jackson, MS 39216.

The NRA Certified Pistol Instructor or the NRA Personal Protection Course [Inside the Home or Outside the Home] will suffice to satisfy Mississippi requirements.

    • How can I become certified as a Concealed Carry (CCW) Instructor in my state?
      Different states have different requirements to become a Concealed Carry Instructor / CHCL Instructor / CCW Instructor / CCP Instructor / SDA Instructor / etc. Most states accept the NRA Pistol Instructor certification as a prerequisite to become an instructor in their state.     • Can you teach me to be a good Concealed Carry (CCW) trainer?
      We can help you become a Concealed Carry Instructor. How good you are depends on several factors. How hard are you willing to work at being a good instructor? How willing are you to continue your education as an instructor? Being a good instructor isn't about taking a class, it's about investing you your ability to convey that important information to your student.

      A.D.S.I. states it like this:

      1. I am committed to the safety of my students, and hold that the expected benefit of any training activity must significantly outweigh any known or perceived risk of that activity.
      2. I believe that it is my responsibility to understand not just what I’m teaching, but WHY I’m teaching any technique or concept, or offering specific advice.
      3. I recognize that defensive shooting skills, along with the drills and gear used, are inherently specialized and usually distinct from those of target shooting, competition and hunting endeavors.

    • Do I have to become an NRA Instructor to be a Concealed Carry (CCW) Instructor?
      You do not have to become an NRA Instructor to become a Concealed Carry Instructor / CHCL Instructor / CCW Instructor / CCP Instructor / SDA Instructor / etc. However, that is usually the path of least resistance and the NRA Pistol Instructor certification is most often readily accepted by the state you are trying to become certified in to teach Concealed Carry.
    • Can I get certified to become a Concealed Carry (CCW) Instructor online?
      We do not certify anyone online to become an instructor of any kind. Few, if any, states allow that kind of training to become certified as a firearms instructor of any sort. Distance learning (online training) has its place in the learning process, but physical skillsets must be witnessed and objectives met in class and on the range.
