NRA Certified Personal Protection In the Home Instructor Training Requirements

Here is what you need to know to become an NRA Certified Personal Protection In the Home Instructor

NRA Certified Personal Protection In the Home Instructor

Confrontations with violent criminals inside the home are rare, but they can happen. Responding to a home invasion requires confidence to respond appropriately, knowledge of the relevant laws, and excellent pistol handling skills. This course gives you the skills necessary to teach students how to react to an incident like this and respond in a way that minimizes the danger to their family and stops the threat.

NRA Certified Personal Protection In the Home Instructor Course with GTBR

What You Will Learn

This course teaches you not only skills but also how to confidently and effectively teach those skills to a student. The topics covered include:
Defensive Pistol Skills
Firearms and the Law
Home Safety Strategies
Responding to Violent Confrontation
Selecting a Self-Defense Pistol
Training for Self-Defense

The Prerequisites

This is a more advanced course, so you must already be an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor. If you have not completed the NRA Basic Instructor Training within the last two years, that will also be required for this course. Finally, you also must have completed the NRA Personal Protection In the Home student course which we usually teach in conjunction with the instructor course.

In order to undertake the NRA Certified Personal Protection In the Home Instructor course at GTBR, you need to know the basics of firearm safety and have a measure of proficiency in shooting skills. There is a link below to the pre-course assessment exercises to ensure you have a suitable background in firearms.

What to Expect

This course goes over the skills in the NRA Personal Protection In the Home student course. Then you practice teaching those same skills to other students. This includes classroom role-playing demonstrating safe firearms handling skills with dummy ammunition. You will also practice using other classroom aids and lesson plans to improve your teaching skills.

Range time is part of this course, so be prepared for live-fire exercises practicing the skills taught in the classroom. The course ends with qualification exam testing the skills learned.

You will receive an NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Instructor Candidate Packet and NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course student packet along with a signed certificate allowing you to teach the NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home student course.

How You Benefit

Completing the NRA Certified Personal Protection In the Home course will equip you with the skills necessary to teach students how to safely use firearms to defend themselves and their families. It also includes training material to help you teach your own class so that you may help save lives.

This also makes you better equipped to educate your own family in what to do when you are responding to an emergency situation in your own home, improving the skills you learned in the student course.

Completing this course will also give you the certification necessary to qualify for the NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home Instructor course, which will allow you to teach students the knowledge skills and attitude necessary to defend against a violent attacker when not at home.

  • Can you teach me to be a good NRA trainer?
We can help you become a NRA Trainer. How good you are depends on several factors. How hard are you willing to work at being a good instructor? How willing are you to continue your education as an instructor? Being a good instructor isn't about taking a class, it's about investing you your ability to convey that important information to your student.

    A.D.S.I. states it like this:

    1. I am committed to the safety of my students, and hold that the expected benefit of any training activity must significantly outweigh any known or perceived risk of that activity.
    2. I believe that it is my responsibility to understand not just what I’m teaching, but WHY I’m teaching any technique or concept, or offering specific advice.
    3. I recognize that defensive shooting skills, along with the drills and gear used, are inherently specialized and usually distinct from those of target shooting, competition and hunting endeavors.
    4. I will encourage my students to ask questions about course material, and I will answer them with thorough and objective explanations.
    5. I understand that Integrity and Professionalism are subjective traits and I strive to maintain high levels of both. I am capable of, and willing to, articulate the reasons for the way I conduct my courses and how I interact with students & peers.
    6. I believe that it is valuable to engage my peers in constructive conversation about differences in technique and concept, with the goal of mutual education and evolution.
    7. I believe that the best instructor is an avid student, and I will strive to continually upgrade my own skills and knowledge. As part of this belief, I understand that my own teachings need to be subject to critique and open to evolution.
  • Can I get certified to become an NRA Instructor online?
We do not certify anyone online to become an instructor of any kind. Few, if any, states allow that kind of training to become certified as a firearms instructor of any sort. Distance learning (online training) has its place in the learning process, but physical skillsets must be witnessed and objectives met in class and on the range.
  • Can I host you for NRA Instructor training?
Yes we can be hosted for NRA Instructor Training and Development. Please see our Host an Event page for further information.
